Dear Parents/Guardians:

RE:  SPRING CAASPP NOTIFICATION LETTER

From Tuesday, May 1, 2018 – Wednesday, May 15, 2018  your child will be participating in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System.

CAASPP is an annual academic testing system that provides information on student progress to ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and/or career. CAASPP assessments include English–language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics for students in grades 3 – 5.  Students in grades 5 take a science test.

The tests include traditional multiple-choice questions as well as ones that require students to explain their answers and show their work.  To learn more, you and your child can visit the California Department of Education Website at this web address http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/  and select the Parent and Student tab

Following spring 2018 CAASPP testing, individual student CAASPP score reports will be available to parents. Student reports include an overall score and a description of the student’s achievement level for ELA and mathematics. Reports will also be available for students who take the science test.

These test results aren’t meant to tell the whole story. The scores are one of several ways for you and your child’s teacher to see how your child is progressing in school. Report cards and teacher’s observations of your child’s performance in the classroom are also used to form a complete picture of your child’s achievement.

As the parent or guardian, you have the option of excusing your child(ren) from any part of the CAASPP.  If you would like to excuse your child from any of the tests, you must submit your request in writing to the school [Education Code 60615.]  Please let the school know as soon as possible so we can make alternative arrangements for your child(ren).

At PLAYA DEL REY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL our goal is for all students to achieve their full potential. The CAASPP test results are one way we can better understand if we are meeting that goal. Thank you for all you do to partner with us in your child’s education.  If you have any questions regarding CAASPP, please contact us at 310-827-3560.

Thank you,

Valencia Blue,

Principal-Playa del Rey ES

Estimado padre o tutor:

Hello Playa Families!

Welcome to week 27 and the month of March. This month we celebrate Women’s History Month as we take the time to honor and celebrate the contributions of women in American History. International Women’s Day (March 8). We also celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th

As we enter the spring quarter and second half of the school year, please help remind your children of the importance of keeping a positive attitude. Attitude #1: Watch your words. Words are powerful. Let them know your expectations to speak kindly to one another. Teach them to counter the unkind words with nice ones. Remember KINDNESS always wins! Attitude #2: Accept everyone. Leaving people out on purpose is not being fair or kind. Suggest that your child look for ways to make others feel that they belong or included.

This message ties in with our character education trait of Fairness. Acts of being fair includes: playing by the rules, taking turns & share with others, listen and have compassion for others, include others and treat a friend how you want to be treated. Character tickets will continue to be rewarded each week to students showing their BEST behavior. Prizes will be awarded on Friday.

February Giving: Thank you to families that donated canned fruit cups last month. With your help, donations have been delivered to the Westside Food Bank. ♥

Read Across America Spirit Week Winners:  Top Participant Rm. 15 (100%); TK-1 Rm. 6 (92%); Gr.2-3 Rm.7 95%; Gr. 4-5 Rms. 10&13 85%. Thank you to all that participated.

Lastly, I would like to thank parent and teacher volunteers for helping to host movie night & Build A Dolphin last Friday. It was truly a fun event.

Hello Playa Families!

Greetings Playa Families,

Welcome to week 24. What an awesome week we had! The students are constantly amazing me with their many accomplishments. I have observed students in class really focused on building their academic skills and developing good character practices. In preparation for our Science Fair, students are focusing on inquiry based science projects. Teachers are engaging students in science and engineering practices integrated with a garden-based theme.

Within the next two weeks, all students will be taking standards based assessments in  ELA (K-5) and Math (3-5) to continue monitoring academic growth and development. Be sure to encourage them to share what they’re learning, persevere, and to stay focused.

Spring parent conferences are right around the corner. This is an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s academic/social progress with your child’s classroom teacher. Please set aside time to schedule your appointment.

Fitness Friday News: Congratulation to our top fitness winners for Jan. 19-Feb. 9: J. Puebla (19 laps), E. Blaine (23 laps), N. Maksot (20 laps), E. Van (16 laps), M. Harris (23 laps), S. Yates (24 laps), D. Leon (17 laps), J. Muhammad (30 laps), T. Murry (23 laps), Special recognition to top school fitness winners: C. Piubeni (43 laps) and H. Maddox (33 laps). Wow!!

Thank you to all the families who are continually supporting by volunteering in classrooms, field trips, school programs/events, fundraisers, donations and any other support we may need. You are all appreciated!

Here’s what’s coming up this week:
Monday February 12th is our Student of Month Assembly and morning coffee fundraiser. Please continue to review with your child our school code of conduct and the ‘Dolphin Way’ that all students should exhibit on a daily basis. Let’s work together to support our Leaders and Scholars.

This month our character education trait is Caring. Acts of Caring show kindness, compassion for others, to express gratitude, forgive and to help others in need. Character tickets will continue to be rewarded each week to students showing their BEST behavior. Prizes will be awarded on Friday.

Wednesday, February 14th-our 4th/ 5th graders our celebrating friendship with their annual Valentine’s Day lunch time dance.

LMU Art Cohort-Year 3
Playa del Rey, in partnership with LMU Family of Schools, will be extending the opportunity for selected teachers to receive professional development in the arts this year. Part of the support is to receive LMU student teachers. This semester teachers and students will participate in projects that integrate African American History-culture/arts and a follow up with Chicano studies in the spring. Please give them your warm Playa welcome as you see them on and around campus.

Be sure to log onto www.pdrschool.org and share with others the great things happening on the campus this week.
